TANICS Roadshow Gets Underway at Beckermet

The TANICS robot began its UK tour as the team held our first demonstration at the Jacobs Engineering and Technology Centre in Cumbria.

tanics roadshow

Industry leaders from a range of sectors, including nuclear and robotics, made the journey to Beckermet to see the robot in action and to share their thoughts on this revolutionary system.

Following a short presentation introducing TANICS, the guests were taken to see the robot in action, via a TV screen and camera mounted behind a protective welding screen. Once the welding was over and the robot safely isolated the guests inspected the quality of the weld and asked the team a range of questions.

Martin Hooley, Mechanical Engineer, said of the demonstration “The quality of the completed welds was excellent. Hours and hours of hard work and dedication have gone into making this system a success so it’s great to finally get the opportunity to show it off to the industry.”

Although primarily developed to address the problem of sealing and verifying fuel storage containers remotely in the nuclear industry, its ability to produce both full and partial penetration butt welds makes TANICS incredibly adaptable resulting in our industry guests sharing their thoughts on potential future applications of the system.

Cathryn Walley, Operations Director, UK Civil Nuclear at Jacobs said “Beckermet was the perfect place to start our roadshow due to its proximity to our nuclear industry customers. However, having the robot mounted on a skid makes the system portable and adaptable to a global market and array of use cases. The team and I are looking forward to pushing the capabilities of TANICS, seeing what we can achieve across a range of industries, and seeing where we can take TANICS globally.”
